Season Change Fridge Deep Clean Part 2

Cleaning the coils of your refrigerator keeps it running smoothly and efficiently! Here’s how:

1. Unplug the unit, the process is quick so your cold foods will keep just fine since you won’t need to open the doors.
2. The coils are usually at the base of the fridge in front, behind a toe-grill that snaps off. If your fridge doesn’t have one, the coils will be on the back of the refrigerator. Condenser coils are metal tubes, wound in a U-shaped grid pattern. You might have to move the fridge away from the wall.
3. Use a flashlight to help you see the coils if they’re under the fridge and vacuum along the inside.
4. Brush away the dust with a coil condenser brush, or any long slender brush. Work it back and forth to loosen the dust and twist it to get into the corners and tight spots. It’s best to keep the vacuum running as you brush.
5. Vacuum any errant dust that might have gotten on the floor. Replace the toe-grill (it should snap on easily) and push the fridge back in place if necessary. Plug the refrigerator back in. All Done!!

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so try to clean up spills as they happen.

Wipe the outside every day or two, depending on use.  

Deep clean seasonally-that means emptying it out, and thoroughly cleaning the inside with warm soapy water.  Put hot water and dish soap in a bucket.  When it gets yucky or too cold, change it.

Clean the seals, for this you might need an old toothbrush. 

Remove the meat and vegetable drawers. Soak them in warm sudsy water or fill with warm soapy water-depends on how dirty they are. To keep them clean, put a few paper towels in the bottom when they are clean and dry.

While the drawers are soaking, wipe down the inside of the fridge, the door panels, and the top.

Take a look at all of your condiments and toss them if they're past the "use by" date; wipe them down as you put them back.

To sanitize, use a solution of 1 tablespoon of liquid bleach to 1 gallon of cool water. It should be done only after cleaning with hot, soapy water.

To avoid messes, be sure that you don't put raw meat in the fridge in packaging that could leak fluids. Throw it in a sealable storage bag or container until you get around to cooking it, this is what the US government recommends.

SERVPRO of West Amarillo wants to remind you what the various terms mean:

Winter Weather Advisory:

Issued by the National Weather Service when a low pressure system produces a combination of winter weather-snow, freezing rain, sleet- that present a hazard but doesn't meet warning criteria. (Looks like something might happen)

Winter Storm Watch:

Issued when there is a potential for heavy snow or ice accumulations.  Usually 24 to 36 hours in advance. (we are going to watch and see what happens)

Winter Storm Warning:

A winter storm is producing or is forecast to produce heavy snow or ice accumulations.

Also in the mix are Blowing Snow advisory, freezing rain advisory, and Blizzard Warning. 

Here in the Texas Panhandle, any and all of these can and will happen at once.

Here in the Amarillo Texas area, winter cold is serious business.  This year, we are in a La Niña pattern, so expect some swings in temperatures. 

To make sure you and your family avoid winter problems, we at SERVPRO of West Amarillo have put together some tips:

1. Prune or trim trees

Trim tree limbs hanging over a structure, car, or sidewalk. Iced branches can snap and cause damage or injury.

2. Test all alarms

Test carbon monoxide and smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries yearly, and replace alarms every 10 years (or per product instructions).

3. Protect your pipes

Insulate crawl spaces, basements, and unfinished rooms, such as garages to protect pipes from freezing and put covers on all outdoor faucets.

4. Check home insulation

Make sure you have the correct amount of insulation. When heat escapes through your attic, ice and snow can melt on your roof and re-freeze. This can create ice dams and cause roof damage, leaks, and even mold growth.

5. If you have one, check the chimney

Have your chimney inspected and cleaned to make sure it's safe and prevent creosote buildup, which can start a fire.

6. Check the furnace

Clean or replace the filter.

7. Inspect and prepare car

Check wipers, fluids, lights, tires, brakes, and the battery. Keep an ice scraper, heavy blanket, gloves, first-aid kit, snacks, and water inside
