Top 5 Reasons Why Smoke Alarms Go Off Randomly
1/5/2022 (Permalink)
Smoke alarms have been a lifesaver for many home and business owners. Their presence allows building occupants to be aware of possible fires, many of which (1,291,500, to be exact) were caused in 2019 alone.
But despite their intended purpose, smoke alarms can go off for reasons that don’t exactly include a fire. For this reason, many property owners can often get confused as to why their smoke alarms go off randomly.
If you’re curious to know what exactly is causing your smoke alarms to blare at random moments, then continue reading below. Knowing the causes can help identify if a fire is happening and if you will need Amarillo fire damage restoration.
Placement
Even the tiniest amount of smoke is enough to set off an alarm. If your smoke detector is placed within an area where smoke is common (say, a kitchen) then the alarm will always go off.
If you’re installing a smoke detector, install it somewhere where common indoor smoke can’t reach it. Avoid installing it beside a window or door since the draft can interfere with the sensors.
Overcooking Food
When you overcook food, a lot of smoke can billow from your pot, pan, or oven, causing your smoke alarm to go off.
If your smoke detector is placed more than 10 feet away from your kitchen, but still goes off, you should consider adjusting the sensitivity of your alarm.
Dust Buildup
Dust buildup can significantly affect your smoke alarm’s sensors. Due to this, it’s highly recommended that you clean your smoke detectors with a vacuum brush attachment at least once a year.
High Humidity and Steam
If your building is incredibly humid inside, then your smoke detector can confuse the dense moisture particles as smoke particles.
This can also happen if there is steam present, such as when one is taking a shower. If your smoke detector is placed somewhere near a bathroom, you may want to move it to a different location. Or keep your bathroom fan running when you shower.
Batteries Need to be Changed
If you’ve noticed that your smoke detector is emitting a long repetitive beep, then it may be time to change the batteries.
Unless your smoke detector operates on a lifelong battery, you will need to replace the batteries at least once a year.
