Tips to Prepare Your Amarillo Business for a Winter Storm

10/26/2021 (Permalink)

Snow storm in Texas As Amarillo business owners, it is important to remember safety first. Here are some tips to prepare yourself.

According to the National Weather Service, the average winter storm in Amarillo will drop two to four inches of snow or ice.

Rainfall can range from 0.50 inches in the drizzle to 5 inches in heavy rain depending on how long it rains and how high the water table is at that time. Precipitation may be rain, sleet, snow, ice pellets, or hail.

As Amarillo business owners, it is important to remember safety first. Here are some tips to prepare yourself:

Tip #1: Prepare Your Business for Winter Weather

The safest way to remove snow and ice from your roof is by using a lightweight rake or broom on the highest points on the roof.

Winterize entrances, exits, ramps, walkways/paths, porches, fences, and retaining walls before winter weather strikes.

Ensure that your storm drains are clear.

Tip #2: Prepare Yourself for Work During a Storm

You should always monitor weather conditions on your local TV or radio stations before heading out to work.

Always use appropriate clothing when working outside in winter weather; dress for the cold and wet, not the heat and dryness.  You are more likely to suffer from frostbite or hypothermia if you are wet and cold, rather than if you are dry and warm.

During/after the storm make sure to keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water (just like you would during any other kind of physical activity).

Tip #3: Prepare Your Equipment for Work During a Storm

Be sure that your equipment is ready to go before winter weather strikes.

Ensure that your vehicle is equipped with a scraper and a brush for clearing ice from your windshield, as well as:

  • flares/reflectors
  • jumper cables
  • flashlight with extra batteries
  • windshield washer fluid
  • a bag of abrasive material such as sand, salt, cat litter or kitty litter to provide traction for ice and snow.

Tip #4: Prepare Your Vehicle for Work During a Storm

Ensure that your vehicle's tank is full – if the fuel line freezes it will burst, compromising the safety of your car.

Also, ensure that your car is equipped with the appropriate items for safe travel.
