Over the past five years, house fires have caused 2,620 deaths and $6.9 billion in property damage.
Simple steps to reduce your risk:
- Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop, keep flammable items away from the stovetop.
- Have the heating system in your home inspected annually, and avoid kerosene heaters.
- Always use a screen for the fireplace.
- Practice extreme caution when using space heaters.
- Be vigilant about cigarettes.
- Never plug too many appliances into one outlet, and extension cords shouldn’t be used permanently.
- Use candles only in rooms where an eye can be kept on them, never leave a room with a candle burning. Extinguish all candles before leaving the house or going to bed. Use candles with a sturdy base, so they won’t fall over.
- Practice safe grilling, keep a fire extinguisher handy. Do not grill indoors, not even in the garage. Don’t use gasoline!
So many tragedies can be prevented with just a little care and preparation. Protect your home, life, and family.
