From January to November of 2019 there were 1,431 tornadoes in the United States. That was an increase from 1,060 from the same period in 2018. Tornadoes killed 38 people in 2019, up from 2018 in that had 8 people die.
SERVPRO® of West Amarillo recommends getting weather-ready by following these tornado preparation tips:
- Know the signs of a tornado and high-risk weather.
- Create and practice a tornado evacuation plan with your family including your pets.
- Keep up with your local weather and know when to expect possible high-risk weather.
- Create and store an emergency kit. This should contain flashlights, a battery powered radio, extra batteries, water, medications, food, duct tape, plastic bags or tarp, identification, a spare set of keys, cash, copies of important documents, a whistle, a phone and charger, a first aid kit, candles, lighter and matches, blankets, and sets of dry clothes.
- Safely get to a safe room, basement, or storm cellar if possible. Do not wait until last minute to take shelter—this increases risk of injury or the inability to take proper shelter.
- If you don’t have access to underground shelter, go to the smallest interior room on the lowest level, such as a bathroom or closet.
- Avoid windows, doors, and outside walls.
- DO NOT seek shelter under a bridge or overpass! A safer location would be a low, flat area.
In the case of tornado conditions, remain calm and wait for the storm to pass. Your priority is keeping yourself and others safe. We at SERVPRO® of West Amarillo know all too well that things can either be restored or replaced but your loved ones cannot.
